Can You Eat Bread on a Low Sodium Diet?
Bread is is one of the top 6 popular processed foods that are high in sodium, it is on the “Salty 6″ list from the American Heart Association. It is important to pay attention to ingredient labels before buying because every brand will be different.
However, this does not mean you need to cut out bread when eating low sodium, you just need to be aware of which brands have less sodium.
As a Dietitian, I teach my patients to do these things when following a low sodium diet.
- Find the Low Sodium Brands– breads can pack in 200-300mg of sodium in a single slice.
- Readjust Your Toppings- if you use sodium free bread, but then pile on deli ham and ranch dressing your meal is no longer low sodium. For a 1,500mg sodium a day budget, aim to keep meals with 300-400mg sodium and snacks with 100-200mg. Check out Alternatives to Deli Meat (Easy Heart Healthy Sandwich Ideas) which provides heart healthy low sodium topping ideas.
- ADD in Heart Healthy Foods– Veggies, avocado, nut butters, legumes, and fruits. These have antioxidants and fiber which can improve your blood pressure and cholesterol.
If you want to eat low sodium and find yourself stopping at Subway, there are a few sandwich combinations you can pick that are low in sodium. I share them in Healthiest Subway Bread | Top Sandwiches Ranked by a Dietitian.
What is Low Sodium Bread?
According to the FDA, “low sodium” means a serving of bread that has 140mg or less of sodium. “Very Low Sodium” has 35mg of sodium or less.
Be sure to check the nutrition label, as most sodium listed is just for one slice of bread, not two. Most breads on the store shelf will not be low sodium!
Where to Read the Bread Label for Sodium
On the bread bag you will scan half way down the label for the word “sodium”. It will show both the amount in milligrams (mg) and also the daily value (DV) percentage. As a rule of thumb, use the mg amount because the DV is based off of a 2,000mg sodium diet. Look for breads that have 140 mg or less in a single slice of bread.

Is Sourdough a Low Sodium Bread?
The variety does not guarantee it will be low salt. There are both high and low sodium whole grain breads. There are also high and low sodium white breads as well.Believe it or not, when looking at my local grocery store, I found most sourdough breads to be HIGHER in sodium than whole wheat options.
The two brands I found with less than 140mg of salt was Thin Sliced Sourdough from Pepperidge Farm and Rudi’s Gluten Free Sourdough

If you cannot find a low sodium sourdough loaf at your grocery store, I would encourage you to follow homemade recipes like this one here.
Is Whole Wheat Bread Lower in Sodium than White Bread?
One variety or brand does not guarantee it will be low sodium. There are both whole wheat and white breads that are low sodium. While whole wheat will have more fiber and protein, some people may need to follow a low fiber diet or are watching their phosphorus intake, so pick the low sodium bread that fits your health needs.

Best Bread for High Blood Pressure
Sprouted Grain bread, like Ezekiel is good for blood pressure as the grains gives it a good boost of fiber and antioxidants. Sprouted grains specifically have more protein, and higher levels of nutrients compared to non sprouted breads. There is research suggesting there are anticancer and anti-diabetic compounds in sprouted grains as well.
A study cited in Nutrients looked at sprouted oats, which have higher amounts of prebiotic fiber and GABA which is good for lowering blood pressure as well.
However, if you are allergic to soy (which is inside Ezekiel bread), Dave’s Killer Good Seed or Grain and Seed would be an excellent choice too!
Best Low Sodium Keto Bread

How to Make A Low Sodium Sandwich

Finding a low sodium bread is just one piece of the puzzle when it comes to making a heart healthy sandwich. If you add deli meat, salami, cheeses and aioli, then you’ve just added 800+ mg of salt which defeats the point of using a low sodium bread!
Here is my dietitian approved formula for making a heart healthy sandwich.
Low Sodium Bread + Protein + Veggies + Flavor boost
Proteins– low sodium cheese, tuna, salmon, egg, legumes, edamame or nut butters
Veggies– cucumber, tomato, bell peppers, onions, coleslaw, spring mix, or lettuce. Almost any vegetable will go well on a sandwich or toast! You can even reheat leftover roasted broccoli or cauliflower from last nights dinner if you want!
What Bread Has the Least Amount of Sodium?
Food for Life Low Sodium Sprouted Grain Ezekiel 4:9 Bread has 0g of sodium.
Low Sodium Cheese
Cheese can easily add another 150-250 mg of sodium depending on the flavor and how much you add. If you love cheese, choose varieties that are naturally low in sodium like these below.
- Fresh Mozzarella- 1 oz has 85 mg sodium. This is usually kept near the deli/specialty cheese section of the store instead of the dairy case with sliced and shredded cheeses. Would taste amazing with tomato, basil, and balsamic glaze.
- Paneer- 1 oz has 80 mg sodium. Used in Indian cuisine, this is a firm cheese that will keep its shape when heated. It has the texture of a mozzerella string cheese stick and takes on the flavor of what it is next to. It can be cubed and pan fried in olive oil.
- No Salt Added Cottage Cheese– Just 45 mg in half cup serving. Im not going to lie, it does taste very different from original. Adding a drizzle of honey, fruits, tomatoes, and/or herbs is a must to give it a boost of flavor

Low Sodium Flavor Boosters
- Tabasco Sauce– 35 mg of sodium for 1 tsp adds a kick of heat without too much salt!
- Vinegar and Oil/Lemon and Oil– Options like red wine vinegar and extra virgin olive oil mixed together go great on sandwiches with cucumber, chickpeas, or tuna.
- Tzatziki– Cedars brand has ~45mg of sodium in a tablespoon. This dip is bursting with flavor from dill, garlic and vinegar.

If you would prefer to use a salad dressing to add more flavor I put together a list in Low Sodium Salad Dressings | Top Brands From a Dietitian

These all have a source of healthy fat + fiber which is perfect for a filling breakfast or mid-afternoon snack.

Conclusion
Even though bread can be notoriously high in salt, there are a handful of brands that offer a low salt option. The brands provided in this post are widely available at most major grocery stores. However, do not overlook the generic store brand bread because there might be a low sodium option that costs less. If where you live does not carry any low salt bread brands, you can make a homemade recipe as well.
