Why is it Important to Have Snacks?
You might think snacks are just for kids or not necessary. However, there are a lot of hidden benefits to snacks that you might not have considered such as:
1. Keep Cravings Controlled
When your blood sugar drops low from long gaps in between meals, then your body’s natural response will be to crave high calorie high sugar foods to get your blood sugar back up. Your cravings are an alert system- they are there for a reason.
Cravings often have little to do with will power, and more often are rooted in large fluctuations in blood sugar.
2. Fewer Food Temptations
When you are hungry or don’t have any food alternatives, it will be 100% harder to turn down all the free food in the breakroom.
3. Increased Energy
Do you have to resort to drinking an extra few cups of coffee mid shift? Skipping meals or eating foods that spike your blood sugar can lead to an energy crash. However, if you can eat something every 3-4 hours you will be better off than going for 12 hours straight without any food.
4. May Benefit Weight Loss
When choosing the right type of snack combinations, your blood sugar levels are more stable which means fewer cravings, and fewer episodes of extreme hunger.
It is easy to think that avoiding snacks will mean eating fewer calories, but often the opposite can happen. When we are too hungry we will overeat, which is counterintuitive for weight loss.

Signs that you could benefit from healthy snacks
1. You can’t stop eating after work
overeating can be a sign that your body did not get enough energy during the day and is trying to compensate for the energy deficit. It is better for your metabolism to eat moderate portions when you are awake, than to eat extra large portions at the end of your shift.
2. Feeling Lightheaded or Losing Focus
Not all hunger is felt as stomach pangs. Running low on energy could show up as having a lack of concentration or feeling lightheaded. Not getting in enough energy from food can impact your performance and how you feel overall.
3. Short Temper
it is hard to have a regulated nervous system and be centered when you are operating on no food. Remember how food is tied to how our blood sugar is responding? When your blood sugar is low, you are prone to be more irritable. The word “hangry” has some science backing to it!
What Type of Snacks Should Healthcare Workers Eat?
The combination of fiber + fat + protein is crucial as this helps keep blood sugar levels steady.
Carbohydrates give your body energy, while proteins and fats help prevent those carbohydrates from spiking your blood sugar. Steady blood sugar levels are the KEY to weight management, craving control, and optimal energy.
If you work overnights, eating causes higher spikes in your blood sugar than if you were eating during the daytime. Those who work overnight have a higher risk for developing metabolic syndrome (obesity, diabetes, and/or heart disease)
Research from the Clinical Nutrition Journal suggests that eating a high protein dinner reduces the rise and fall of one’s blood sugar from overnight eating by 71.4% as compared to eating a standard dietary guideline meal.
So if you work overnight, prioritizing protein at your meal before going into the night shift and getting it in with your snacks is non-negotiable if you want to maintain a healthy weight and reduce your risk for developing metabolic syndrome.

What Protein Bars are Best?
There are SO MANY protein brands out there. Ideally, look for ones that contain:
1. Whole food ingredients (nuts, seeds, oats, dates etc)
2. Less than 7 g added sugar
3. At least 10 g protein
Currently my favorite are BUILTPuff and RXbars.
Most protein bars use some form of artificial sweeteners like sucralose or aspartame, or non-nutritive sweeteners like Erythritol, Stevia and Monk Fruit. Everyone tolerates these sweeteners differently. Some people have intense cramping when they eat sugar alcohols, and for others it does not bother them.

What if I don’t have time to eat?
If you truly don’t even have 2 minutes to eat a string cheese and grapes, then I would resort to packing a liquid meal. Brands like Huel, or a DIY protein shake blended with frozen fruit, oats, nut butter and placed inside a container like hydroflask or Yeti that can keep the cold temperature for 12 hours.
If possible, speak with your supervisor to see if there could be a way to get at least a 10-15 reprieve. I know many facilities are under-staffed, but if you can’t even catch your breath to pee or eat something it will lead to burn out.
