Is Noosa Yogurt Healthy? A dietitian's review

Noosa Yogurt is an Aussie-style yogurt that’s claimed to be “yoghurt made the right way”, but you might be wondering is Noosa Yogurt Healthy? In this review i’ll share about the overall benefits of yogurt, if Noosa is healthy for you, or if its just a sugar bomb in disguise!

Is it Healthy?

Lets look into the ingredients and nutrition inside the smaller 4.5oz size container of Noosa yogurt. Below is an overview of their popular Blueberry flavor.

At first glance, the ingredients look simple and recognizable. It includes:

  • Grade A Pasteurized Whole Milk
  • Fruit Purée (Blueberries, Water, Cane Sugar, Pectin, Lemon Juice Concentrate, Locust Bean Gum)
  • Cane Sugar
  • Wildflower Honey
  • Kosher Gelatin
  • Pectin
  • Live Active Cultures

This doesn’t “look” bad at first glance. However, when looking at the nutrition label, here is what stands out to me.

Saturated Fat- 4 grams, (20% of your daily value, DV)
Added Sugar: 11 grams, (44% DV)
Calcium- 15% DV
Vitamin D- 0% DV
Protein- 6 grams

In the next section i’ll dive deeper into why each of these pieces are important when deciding on what brand of yogurt to buy.

Again, this is for the smaller 4.5oz container that looks similar to other single serve yogurt cups. The larger 8oz containers, as shown in the image below, have much higher amounts of sugar, saturated fat, and protein because the portion size is larger.

How Healthy is Noosa Yogurt?

The Healthy Parts:

1. Creamy and Delicious– people often say it tastes just like ice cream!
2. Naturally Occurring Calcium– a necessary nutrient for bone health.
3. Live Active Cultures– probiotics found in yogurt and other fermented foods can improve digestion, mood and immunity.

The Downsides:

  1. High in Added Sugar– for such a small portion, 11g is a lot of added sugar for yogurt. However, there is a plain unsweetened yogurt available, but only in 8oz.
  2. Lower in Protein– 6 grams is a good source, but it doesn’t compare to Greek or Skyr yogurts which usually have 12-15g in a 5oz serving.
  3. No Vitamin D– Vitamin D is essential to absorb calcium from foods for bone health. While Noosa naturally contains calcium, it is missing the Vitamin D. If you are added yogurt to your diet to improve your bone health, I would opt for another brand.
  4. Higher in Saturated Fat– as a Heart Health Dietitian, I recommend limiting the amount of saturated fat in your diet. Granted, this is coming from a whole food source and not an ultra processed fried food. A serving of Noosa has 22% of the DV, so eating 1 a day can still fit into an overall heart healthy eating pattern.

How Healthy is it Compared to Other Yogurt?

Let’s compare this to some other popular brands on the grocery store shelf such as Chobani Less Sugar, Fage Blueberry, Yoplait, and even frozen yogurt.

Surprisingly, Yoplait blueberry yogurt is higher in added sugar and lower in protein than Noosa yogurt.

I’ll also add that Fage yogurt added sugar is 7g only if you add in all the jam that comes in the divided compartment. If you add only half of it, you can lower the amount of sugar even more.

While Noosa has the creaminess and thickness of ice cream, nutritionally it is not the same as eating frozen yogurt.

What are Healthier Yogurt Brands?

The best way to make a healthier yogurt is buying the plain version and adding frozen or fresh fruit to naturally sweeten it. If that is not sweet enough, you can always add a drizzle of honey or maple syrup. Both of these methods to sweeten yogurt will usually use less added sugar than what you can find on store shelves.

My absolute favorite is Fage! I love how to fruit jam is separated on the side of the container, which allows you to control the amount of sweetness. I use a small spoonful to flavor mine if I am eating on the go and don’t have fresh fruit on hand.

From a taste perspective, I don’t like the yogurts that use stevia, monk fruit, or sucralose for sweetness. Additionally, some people find non nutritive sweeteners to cause stomach upset or have an aftertaste.

You can give your yogurt a crunch with a low sodium and low added sugar cereal. I made an entire list for you in Best Low Sodium Cereal | 23 Dietitian Approved Brands (2026)

Siggis and Chobani Less Sugar are my other go-to yogurt brands, as pictured below.

Low sugar high protein yogurt brands

1. For Kids

I would opt for a lower sugar brand like Chobani Less Sugar (5g added sugar) or Siggis Kids (4g added sugar) if you want a convenient ready to eat option.

If you have the time, you can use plain greek or regular yogurt and add your own fresh or defrosted frozen fruit inside.

Pro tip- adding frozen fruit the night before in a bowl of plain yogurt allows it to soften and the juices naturally sweeten the whole bowl! Its amazing and will be bursting with flavor. Your kids won’t even know that they are eating plain yogurt.

My favorite fruits to use are mini wild blueberries, mango chunks, and raspberries. These are all small fruits and the texture does not taste soggy or mushy like a defrosted whole strawberry.

2. For Diabetics

The added sugar in Noosa yogurt makes it not the best choice if looking to manage your blood sugars. While the label says 11g sugar is only 22% of your daily value (DV), the World Health Organization recommends limiting added sugar to 25g a day for women, and 35g a day for men.

So you are actually taking in 44% of the recommended DV for added sugar by eating Noosa yoghurt!

If you want a flavored yogurt, there are other high protein low sugar options that still taste great. Fage and chobani less sugar are a great choice if you do not like the taste of stevia, sucralose, or monk fruit.

Brands like TwoGood and Ooikos are sweetened with stevia and have 0-2g of added sugars. A study from Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome journal found that stevia does not raise blood sugar, which means sweetened yogurts can still be consumed when managing blood sugars.

The higher saturated fat also makes Noosa less ideal, as many people living with diabetes already have high cholesterol, or are at a higher risk for developing heart disease.

While the saturated fat isn’t coming from a processed food (i.e fried food), I would stay on the side of being cautious and limit my total saturated fat intake when it comes to being heart healthy!

3. For Pregnancy

Eating whole milk yogurt can be a great way to get in enough calories, calcium and protein while pregnant.

However, as I shared above, the no Vitamin D added in the yogurt is a deal breaker for me as you need this vitamin to absorb calcium. You also need more protein while pregnant, so eating a higher protein option with added Vitamin D is a healtheir option.

4. For Weight Loss?

I would pass over Noosa and go straight for a high protein style yogurt such as Greek or Skyr. Whole milk yogurts compared to non fat alternatives can be great for feeling fuller longer. However, with weight loss, you want to focus on higher protein sources.

I would pick the 4.5oz yogurt size as an occasional snack, but would not use it as a grab and go breakfast because of the lower protein content. It is recommended to include 20-30 grams of protein at breakfast for weight loss.

The protein recommendation for weight loss doesn’t all need to come from yogurt itself. You can take a greek or skyr yogurt, add in nuts, fruit, and granola.

Benefits of Eating Yogurt

1. Reduce Risk for Type 2 Diabetes

A meta-analysis inside Advances in Nutrition suggests that eating yogurt is inversely associated with Type 2 Diabetes. Meaning those who consume yogurt are less likely to develop Type 2 Diabetes.

It is worth noting that studies haven’t fully addressed unsweetened vs. plain yogurt and high fat vs. non fat yogurt. Any of these varieties will still contain the probiotics, protein, vitamin D, magnesium, and Calcium that all benefit the body.

So while we might not have the exact answer for if we should stick only to non-fat or go with full fat yogurt, it is important to see that yogurt specifically has health benefits.

2. Lower Risk for Stroke and Heart Attack

The American Journal of Hypertension released an article with findings that eating 2 or more servings of yogurt a week can reduce risk for stroke or heart attack by 17% in women and 21% in men compared to people who consume yogurt 1 time or less a month.

I did a comparison of the Paleo vs. Mediterranean diet in Mediterranean Diet vs Paleo Diet | Which is Better for Heart Health? as yogurt and dairy are not apart of the Paleo eating plan.

Yogurt is naturally low in sodium but high in Calcium and Vitamin D which both play a key role in blood vessel health. Calcium allows blood vessels to properly dilate (aka relax). When blood vessels are constricted, that leads to elevated blood pressure.

Vitamin D also keeps vessels flexible and less rigid. It is also an independent risk for high blood pressure. This means reguardless of other lifestyle and diet factors, if you are Vitamin D deficient, your risk for hypertension is elevated.

Many Americans are Vitamin D deficient because of working inside, living in northern climates with fewer hours of sunlight, and low intake of dairy foods.

3. Healthy Digestion

Probiotics found in the live cultures of yogurt feed the good bacteria in your gut and promote regular digestion.

4. Weight Management

Yogurt is perfect for managing weight or weight loss for three reasons according to a study in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition.

  1. Active cultures (aka probiotics). Fermented foods like yogurt can benefit your gut bacteria and also change how hungry you feel.
  2. Protein Content– compared to carbohydrates or fats takes the most amount of energy to digest and is the most satiating (aka filling) Not only does the protein make it filling, it allows you to keep your lean muscle mass while in a calorie deficit.
  3. Blood Sugar Response– Yogurt does not spike your blood sugar like refined carbohydrates do. When your blood sugar is stable throughout the day it can reduce cravings and overeating.

If you want a true double whammy for weight loss, pair yogurt with oats. Oats contain B-glucan which increases feelings of fullness and also decreases the amount of food you will eat later in the day. There are more details inside Best Time to Eat Oats for Weight Loss | Top Tips from a Dietitian

In the Journal of Preventative Nutrition and Food Science, the studies cited all suggest probiotics can have a positive impact on blood glucose, fat mass, weight, and feelings of fullness which are all beneficial for weight management.

Overnight oats is a great way to combine the two, but if you are in a rush, or didn’t have time to prep it the night before, you can always cook plain instant oats in the microwave add in some frozen fruit to cool down the oats, and then top it with your favorite yogurt.

5. Cost Effective Protein Source

Compared to meat, yogurt is a rich protein source that costs significantly less. If you are looking to lose weight or eat better, getting in enough protein is key! You don’t need to use protein powders or bars when you can eat something like greek or skyr yogurt.

Alternative Ways to Enjoy the Yogurt?

If you like the taste of Noosa, but feel like its not very filling or is too sweet, here are some different ways to enjoy the yogurt!

1. Fruit dip

Perfect for dipping berries, sliced pears, or apples

2. Spread

Spread on toast, bagels, waffles, or pancakes as an alternative to syrup or cream cheese.

3. Mix 50/50 with Plain Greek Yogurt

Noosa has a cinnamon roll flavor that looks too good to be true! However, if I want to feel full and get in enough protein for a snack or breakfast, then adding in plain greek or skyr yogurt will lower the sugar content while boosting the protein.

Other Considerations

The biggest issue consumers bring up is the packaging being harder to open. There is a foil seal and a plastic lid on top of that. This can make it challenging for some to open who have reduced hand strength.

Conclusion

Noosa yogurt is a creamy and delicious yogurt. It’s high sugar and low protein content does not make it the best choice when looking to lose weight or manage blood sugar. The benefits that yogurt offers can be found in a variety of other higher protein lower sugar options. If choosing Noosa, enjoy the smaller 4.5oz single serve package, and eat it on occasion.
